Homeless Women
Homeless women and violence are often
referred together. There are many reasons why women are
homeless. One of the main causes of homelessness in women is
violence at home. Many homeless women ran away from a violent
household or were thrown out. There are many homeless women
blended into groups of homeless people all over America. Most
homeless women often hide themselves. Many homeless women have
children with them. They are sometimes referred together as
homeless families. There are also money and grants for homeless
pregnant women and homeless elderly women.
There are hostels for homeless women and
there are also homeless shelters specifically for homeless
women, homeless children and homeless youth. Homeless shelters
for homeless women aims to provide safety for these women and
keep them out of the street as well as setting them back on
track to be able to take care of themselves. Each big city has
its own housing for homeless women and children.
Homeless statistics show growing number of
homeless women
Studies show that most homeless women are
from poor families. Many homeless women suffer mental illnesses
and are victims of violence. In recent years, homeless
statistics show that the number of homeless women grows faster
than the number of homeless men.
Studies of homeless women show that many
homeless women have children who are not homeless. But, there
are some homeless women who have their children with them as
homeless families. Many homeless women stay in single homeless
shelters while other are found living in both single homeless
shelters for women and homeless shelters for families. Homeless
American women are found all over big cities such as New York
City.
About homeless elderly women
Homeless elderly women constitute about 15%
of all homeless unaccompanied women, according to the 1996
study by the Urban Institute. You often see homeless elderly
women in New York City carrying shopping bags containing all
their belongings. More other studies on homeless elderly women
found that almost 50% of the homeless elderly women (over 50
years old) had received mental health or substance abuse
services. 40% of the homeless elderly women also receive
Supplementary Social Security Disability benefits or SSD.
Mental health problems as well as physical health problems are
common among elderly homeless women.
