Fair Housing
Can Fair Housing and the Federal Fair
Housing Act help homeless people? The problem of homeless is
largely linked to the problem of housing and fair housing in
particular. If there are enough affordable housing, some of the
currently homeless people will find housing and will no longer
be homeless. Many homeless shelters can also find fair housing
to help homeless people. Many nonprofit organizations that are
currently helping homeless people will be able to expand their
resources through fair housing programs to shelter more
homeless youth, homeless children, homeless families, and other
homeless people overall.

Most housing
options are not affordable for homeless people,
even with the Federal Fair Housing Act. The
Federal Fair
Housing act and the fair housing laws were
first established in 1968, before the problem
of homelessness became large enough. Homeless
problems did not become great concern until in
the 1980s, much later than the fair housing
laws were established. In the 1980s, fair
housing laws weren't linked to the problem of
homelessness yet because people expected the
problem of homelessness to not last so
long.

Fair Housing and Homelessness
The Fair Housing laws, although do not
mention homeless people in particular, are geared to help low
income, poor people including homeless people, find affordable
housing. There are federal fair housing programs, state fair
housing programs, as well as local fair housing programs that
can help homeless people find suitable housing. Fair housing
programs also help provide charities and homeless shelters
house more homeless people.
